Comfort and entertainment won’t be the first thing on your mind if you’re evacuating due to a disaster… However, we do recommend adding something to your 72-hour kit to help you cope mentally and pass the time. This could be anything from a sudoku book or small novel to a deck of cards or travel-sized games.

Young kids have an especially hard time dealing with an evacuation. You need to give them distractions! Packing some small cars or action figures in your 72-hour kit could be SUPER helpful!

It’s hard to predict how much downtime you’ll have when faced with a disaster. If you find yourself in an emergency shelter, you’ll have lots of time because there’s not much to do there. That’s when your comfort and entertainment items will come in handy.

Now, don’t go overboard adding extra items to your 72-hour kit because they’ll add weight. Any entertainment or comfort items you pick should be small and lightweight. We suggest most people just pack a deck of cards — check out these cool Survival Tips Playing Cards by Frog & Co.

Here are some ideas of things to pack in your 72-hour kit for comfort and entertainment:

  • Pictures of Family
  • Pocket-Sized Scriptures
  • Deck of Cards
  • Small Card Games
  • Crossword Puzzle Book or Sudoku Book
  • Paperback Book
  • Kindle (Make sure you have a powerpank in your 72-hour kit to charge it!)
  • MP3 Player (Again, you’ll need a powerbank.)
  • Small Dice Games, such as Yahtzee and Farkle
  • Small Toys for Kids
  • Notebook and Pen
