Injuries are common after a disaster. Putting some basic first aid supplies in your 72-hour kit could come in handy if you end up needing to care for wounds and other injuries.
If you don’t know much about first aid, a small, premade first aid kit will be sufficient for your 72-hour kit. However, if you’ve had any first-aid training, you should do your part to be better prepared to help injured people with a more comprehensive first-aid kit.
Of course, it’s easy to get carried away when building a first-aid kit from scratch. There are hundreds of items you could include, from bandages and ointments to tweezers, gloves, and masks…
If you want to build a custom first aid kit, here’s a checklist to help you get started:
- Bandages in various sizes
- Gauze dressing and tape
- Celox, or some other hemostatic agent
- Splits (finger)
- Moleskin
- Tweezers
- Scissors
- Latex gloves
- Facemasks
- Thermometer (disposable, too)
- Pen light
- Suture kit
- Cold Pack / Heat Pack
- Iodine tablets
- Sting relief gel
- Burn relief gel / Sunburn ointment
- Liquid Bandage
- Over-the-counter medication
You can get a lot of these items for cheap at your local Dollar Tree. (Did you know Dollar Tree has an online store?)
There’s also nothing wrong with buying a premade first aid kit as a starter and then adding items to it to make it better. Just remember that you need to carry whatever you put in your 72-hour kit, so the first-aid portion should be as lean as possible.
