During an emergency, personal hygiene usually isn’t the first thing on a person’s mind. However, it should not be overlooked.
Staying clean is an important part of your health — infections and disease can spread more easily in unsanitary conditions.
Good personal hygiene is also important to your mental health. Being dirty is just bad for a person’s morale… Clean teeth and freshly-combed hair can go a long way in making you feel better.
Every 72-hour bag should include a small personal hygiene kit. Everyone will have different needs and wants, but the basic list is about the same. You don’t need a lot.
Basic Personal Hygiene Kit List
You probably have most of the necessary items on hand for your personal hygiene kit already. And if you don’t, your local Dollar Tree is an inexpensive way to get what you need. Putting together a personal hygiene kit doesn’t have to be expensive.

Here’s a checklist of basic items to include in your personal hygiene kit:
- Toilet Paper
- Waste Bags
- Feminine Hygiene Products
- Tissues / Wet Wipes
- Hand Sanitizer
- All-in-One Bodywash / Shampoo / Conditioner
- Disposable Washcloth
- Toothbrush / Toothpaste / Floss
- Deodorant
- Comb / Brush
- Lotion / Chapstick
- Sunblock / Insect Repellant
- Old Pair of Glasses
- Razor
- Fingernail Clippers
- Compact Mirror
If possible, buy ‘travel-size’ items for your personal hygiene kit because they will take up less space in your bag. If you’re super picky about your soaps and lotions, you can purchase travel-size bottles and fill them up with your favorite products.
Store all of your personal hygiene items in a plastic bag. This will keep them dry and prevent any spills from getting on your clothes or any other items in your 72-hour kit. Clear Zip-Lock bags work well for this purpose.
When we put together personal hygiene kits for our 72-hour bags, we also made a few extras to have on hand to help others during an emergency. This didn’t cost us much extra money because we bought most of our personal hygiene items in bulk. In addition to preparing our family, we want to be prepared to help out our community!
