When it comes to matches, waterproof ones are the superior choice. They allow you to start a fire, even in wet conditions. However, waterproof matches costs 10 times as much as regular matches! That makes the purchase hard to justify.

Luckily, there are tons of ways to make waterproof matches at home with minimal cost. Here are the two best DIY methods.

1. Waterproofing Matches with Nail Polish

This method is super simple, and our favorite ways! Start by dipping the head of a match in some fingernail polish. It can be any color but avoid glitter. Coat the head of the match liberally and then rest it hanging over the edge of a counter to dry. That’s it!

Store your DIY waterproof matches in an airtight container. You use them the same way as regular matches. Just strike them on anything!

2. Waterproofing Matches with Wax

If you don’t own any fingernail polish, you can waterproof matches with any old wax candle you have lying around. Simply heat the wax to a melted state and dip the head of a regular match in the wax. Set the match down on the edge of a counter to dry.

To use waterproof matches made with wax, you’ll need to gently scrape the wax away before striking the match. This is not difficult, but we prefer the nail polish way for simplicity.

If you think this post is silly, and you’d rather just buy waterproof matches, you can get some good ones from Survival Frog. The most important thing is that you take action and get yourself prepared for an emergency.
