Freezer meals are a major timesaver! You can prep a bunch at once and then store them in your freezer until you are ready to use them.
We like to use freezer meals on days when we’re really busy. All we do is plop one into a crockpot in the morning and then dinner is ready when we need it. This is great because it prevents us from running out and grabbing unhealthy fast food when we’re in a hurry.
Unfortunately, we’ve noticed a little freezer burn on some of our freezer meals. This icky layer of ice forms when moisture escapes and freezes to the surface of your food. It can change the taste and texture of your meals! Yuck!
Luckily, there are two major ways you can prevent freezer burn so your freezer meals are a success. Let us show you how!
Remove ALL the Air from Your Containers
We like to store our freezer meals in gallon-size Ziploc bags. They seem to work well for most meals, and we love the fact that they are disposable. If you want to use Ziploc bags for your freezer meals, make sure that you remove as much air as possible before you seal them. When the air is gone, moisture has nowhere to go, and freezer burn is much less likely to happen.
If you plan to make a lot of freezer meals, you might want to invest in a vacuum sealer. It’s great to have on hand for other food storage, too.
If you’re not using Ziploc bags for your freezer meals, try to give your food an extra layer of protection by wrapping it tightly in plastic wrap, waxed paper, or aluminum foil before freezing. This minimized the amount of air around your food and helps to prevent freezer burn.
Chill Your Food First and Freeze It in Small Batches
Another way to prevent freezer burn is to place your freezer meals in your refrigerator first and then transfer them to your freezer in small batches. This is important because you need to keep an eye on your freezer’s temperature. If you put too much food in at one time, the temperature can drop and cause the food inside to melt slightly and get freezer burn. Just don’t forget to move your freezer meals!
You can store freezer meals for six to nine months in your freezer. Just be sure to clean out and organize your freezer regularly so that your freezer meals get rotated.
