If your home gets burglarized or damaged, you’ll need to file a claim with your home insurance company. This is something we hope you’ll never have to do… but, there are steps you can take now to make the reimbursement process run more smoothly.
Your home insurance company will want you to prove the value of what was in your home. That’s where a home video inventory comes in handy! It makes you much more likely to receive fair compensation for your losses.
How to Take a Home Video Inventory
Taking a video inventory of your home is easy — don’t overcomplicate the process! Simply use the video camera on your phone and spend 10 to 15 minutes filming. Your home video inventory does not need to be of professional quality.
Here are the basic steps for filming:
- State your name, date, and address at the beginning of your video.
- Start on one side of your home and slowly walk to the other, narrating what you have in your home. Don’t forget to include your garage and anything else on your property.
- As you walk around, zoom in on high-value items. If possible, get the product IDs in your video. Also explain why items are valuable and how much you paid for them.
It’s that simple!
After you’ve created a video inventory of your home, store it in a safe place. Also put a DVD copy in your Grab and Go Binder.
Be sure to update your home video inventory every couple of years, especially if you’ve made any big purchases or changes to your home.
